The Cow and the Ice Cream

Supposedly from a teacher in the Nashville area. There's a good chance you've seen this, but it's good to be reminded. Besides, for me at least, the illustrative graphic is new! —wtp

We're worried about the Cow—
when it's all about the Ice Cream.

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year... The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.

To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids.

I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother.

The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a betterplace. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded and he sat down. Now it was Olivia's turn to speak.

Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down. The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream..."

She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it?. She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was the ice cream.

Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and 52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream. The other 48 percent know they are going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess."

This is the ice cream Obama promised us:

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Unsustainable Spending
By David Warren

A spectre is haunting Europe, and America -- the spectre of Keynesianism finally gone nuts.

What began, not very innocently, as a suggestion that governments should run deficits in bad times, and surpluses in good times, gradually "evolved." In the next phase, governments tried to balance at least the operating account during the best of times. In phase three, governments ran deficits by habit during the good times, but much bigger "stimulus" deficits during the bad times. We are now entering phase four.

Canadians tend to feel smug about this, for we look south at a fiscal catastrophe that had nothing to do with us. For the last generation, we have been trying to claw our way back to budgetary conditions before Pierre Trudeau broke the bank. This had once seemed a small price to pay for his "just society" (or "just watch me"). Surely it was worth mortgaging our children's future, and that of their children, and children's children, for the transient privilege of being governed by such a man. (I can still hear the erotic screams of the women, from the 1968 general election, as Trudeau passed by.)

By about 1984, we had had enough. Michael Wilson balanced the operating account, then Paul Martin balanced the overall budget, and today Jim Flaherty tries to keep the federal debt "shrinking" in proportion to national income. (Of course, the debt itself grows and grows.)

We feel smug because we are watching President Barack Obama do for the United States what Prime Minister Trudeau did for us -- although in their case, on top of what Obama's predecessors did. The U.S. national debt now exceeds $12.3 trillion in a $14.2 trillion economy, and the U.S. government is now piling it on with unprecedented new deficits. The U.S. Treasury's borrowing requirement is, as it were, coming up against the Great Wall of China.

Little things, such as the heart of the U.S. space program, are being gutted to make way for metastasizing social security entitlements and debt service payments that will soon swamp the entire federal budget -- thus requiring the elimination of more little things such as the army, navy and air force. At some point the entitlements simply can't be paid, without hyperinflation.

I am not exaggerating. The American debt is now at levels that ring bells at the International Monetary Fund. And as the world's biggest debtor rapidly accelerates its borrowing, the fiscal carrying capacity of the rest of the planet comes into question.

There are two large reasons why we cannot afford to be smug, up here. The first is that after adding the "entitlement" heritage of our provincial governments to the federal debt load, our position is not much better. The second is that even if it were much better, the tsunami coming from south of the border will anyway sweep all our dikes away.

The Obama administration's financial projections are extremely optimistic, yet even if they all come true, the U.S. debt will continue to grow unsustainably. The kind of alarm falsely placed in "global warming" would more usefully be directed towards the remarkable cooling effect this will have, as all our fiscal and demographic trends converge. For this is a predictable future; an issue where the numbers correspond to real things, not to mere speculation.

We can already see where the U.S. is headed, because Iceland and Greece are showing the way. Both have now passed a point of no return, and both are being followed down that plughole by Britain and several other European countries that will probably precede the U.S. into outright bankruptcy. The State of California also gives some clues.

While an optimist would say that we are witnessing the final demise of the welfare state, and good riddance, a pessimist would observe that everything must go down with it. Moreover, as we have seen from the history of Germany and other countries, fiscal catastrophe accentuates every latent threat to public order.

For our governments have created vast bureaucracies, employing immense numbers whose livelihoods depend entirely (whether they realize it or not) upon the capacity of profit-earning people to pay constantly increasing taxes.

It should have been grasped, decades ago, that the constant transfer of resources from the productive to the unproductive must eventually tip the ship. And when it does, real people go over the side, who get angry when they are thrown in the water. There are consequences to that anger.

The idea that we can spend our way out of a debt crisis -- or what I called above, "Keynesianism gone nuts" -- has already been rejected by the Tea Party movement in the U.S., and has always been rejected by voters of conservative tendency. They know what's wrong with the present order, and have an important teaching function to the rest of the electorate, which doesn't get it yet.

But more urgently, we are in need of a positive conception of how to rebuild economy and society, when Nanny State collapses under her own weight. For yelling "run!" is only a short-term solution.

Are you Insulted Yet??

What Democrats think of the American People.

This will come as no surprise...

"In other words: the American public doesn't care about how our representatives govern us--which is to say, about how we govern ourselves. Whether Congress follows its rules, whether there is democratic accountability, whether there is constitutional probity--none of this matters according to Hoyer. Rather, the self-centered and self-concerned American people only care about the (alleged) results of the legislation."

I'm thinking ol' Steny's going to find out just how wrong he is. Soon.

But hey, maybe it's just me.

Beware California Repair

Hello Patriots,

Some of you may have received emails or invitations from RepairCalifornia.org.

Please be warned that according to two separate sources, among the things this group wants to do with their vaunted California Constitutional Convention are:

1)  reverse Proposition 13
2)  eliminate the currently required super-majority vote to raise taxes in the California

From all reports, they are Liberal Progressives who are tired of the "restraints" under which their agenda has been forced to labor in California (blood shooting out of my eyes!)—but they are masquerading under the banner of "populism", hoping to use the popularity of the Tea Party Movement to gather support.

Be careful of these posers.

At least one member of the Executive Committee of the Bay Area Council of which this group is an offshoot, donated $2,300 to Obama for American in 2008: Michael A. Covarrubias.

As you can see here: http://www.campaignmoney.com by searching his name for '08.

I do not think his idea of "repairing" California is our idea of it.

Beck's Epic Takedown of Joe Klein of Time Magazine

Obama's Idea of "Austerity"

In the wildly unlikely case you mistook Obama's call for "austerity" as actual cost cutting by the Imperial State Bureaucracy...

Silly Citizen. He means austerity for you...not the government, Gaia forbid.
You don't have to be a proponent of small government to favor austerity. Communists and socialists have been doing it for years. So, too, have the mullahs. They are excellent practitioners of the same kind of austerity that sneers at free choice and reliably produces shoddy products and grinding poverty.

Price controls, shortages, queuing and rationing -- all those are key elements in the socialist tool kit. Since this administration was already prepared to ration health care , CO2 emissions and incomes (with severe tax penalties for anyone making more than $200,000 or $250,000 a year), why not ration jobs as well.

Choice

"There must be a RESTORATION so that there is not a TRANSFORMATION".

-Glenn Beck, speaking about learning and restoring the principles and values of our Founders....and the "evolutionary transformation" demanded by Progressives like Barack Obama..."transformation" FROM our foundational ideas, values and principles, to those found desirable by the elites who consider only themselves fit to RULE us common people.

"Search for answers everywhere...
We will be the key.
Just remember who we are...
We will be the key.

INTERPOL Above the Law

Here are three links about the recent executive order signed by Barack Obama, making INTERPOL free to operate in the United States without being subject to the constraints of the Constitution.

They are now ABOVE THE LAW of the United States of America.

Thought you were angry with what he's done so far? You ain't seen nothin' yet!

There's only one way this action makes sense: The intentional surrender of our sovereignty by the President of the United States of America.

If you can think of another reasonable excuse, I'd love to hear it.

INTERPOL UPDATE: Friday, December 8, 2010

I was happy to hear a panel, including Charles Krauthammer, on Fox today explain that the "immunity" that Interpol is getting will NOT mean they can run around arresting or investigating American citizens without Constitutional limitations, which is certainly what the initial fear buzz indicated.

Turns out the executive order extends to Interpol the relatively benign "immunity" that the Red Cross, and as Krauthammer said, "the Swiss delegation", enjoy.

As he put it, "they won't have to pay parking tickets".

While this turns out not to warrant the somewhat breathless outrage of many bloggers, myself included, I think we can all be forgiven for leaping to the conclusions we did, given the propensities of the Marxist Grad Student in charge.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story evolves.

Pelosi the Pinhead Totalitarian

Robert remembered it, and Jack found it....and you'd better read this quote....'cause this woman is in charge of writing legislation that affects your life.
In answering a question from a student about how Pelosi was going to get Americans to cut back on their carbon emissions, the leading Democratic lawmaker said it was important to educate children on how to conserve energy and for citizens to build more environmentally friendly homes.

"We have so much room for improvement," she said. "Every aspect of our lives must be subjected to an inventory ... of how we are taking responsibility."
Do you suppose she meant a private, personal, individual, spiritual, moral "inventory"....or given her record, do you suppose she means that the government must make an inventory of all of our lives to determine if we are "improving" and "taking responsibility" in ways of which the Imperial State approves?

Not much doubt, is there?

Here's the source...Nancy Pelosi's own website. Apparently bragging about this opinion.

Catholic Church Funding ACORN

Progressive Catholic. That sounds like a contradiction in terms. But unfortunately, it's not.

There is an ongoing effort by some to conflate Catholic Doctrine and Liberation Theology...including Radical anti-Global Warming , anti-Death Penalty positions.

Sad day for staunch Conservative Catholics.

AIM (Accuracy in Media) has the story.

Alinskyian training sessions in the religious context are designed not to develop or cultivate a personal relationship with Christ and promote traditional values and cultural institutions but to engage in Marxist political activity and radical change. Stephanie Block puts it this way: "Their worldview is marred by visions of class struggle and perpetual revolution. They are systematically trained to renounce moral truth in favor of consensus-based 'values.'"

What has happened over the course of years, some of these experts say, is that Catholics trained in Alinskyian thought have become confused about moral issues and problems. They think, for example, that opposition to the death penalty is on the same moral plane as opposition to abortion, even though Catholic moral teaching has never precluded capital punishment. They believe that fighting "global warming" is as important as saving the lives of unborn children or preventing the killing of the elderly. They are trained to fight for abortion and homosexual "rights" in violation of traditional Catholic Church teaching.
I think it's time for us to reach out to Conservative Catholics to join our movement...not only to Take our Country Back....but to Take Their Church Back!
